When you arrive in Bangkok for the first time, the city can be intimidating. It is tempting to want to hurry up, check into your hotel, and rush into the city. But, if you do not take the time to plan out your trip, you could end up missing a lot of cool sites and attractions.
Even with a whole week to enjoy Bangkok, you may not get the chance to see everything. Use the following 6 tips to make sure you get as much out of your trip as possible.
#1 – Travel in Metered Taxis
This first tip is perhaps the most important. During your week stay, there is a good chance that you will be taking taxis to reach the majority of your destinations in Bangkok.
The majority of taxis in the city now uses meters, instead of charging a flat rate. This is good for you, as flat rate trips tend to be more expensive than they should be. Though, some drivers will turn off the meter and attempt to charge a flat rate. If this occurs, get the driver to turn on the meter.
The average rate is about 35 baht for the first couple of kilometers. So, typically, you should only get charged about 50 baht to travel a few kilometers.
As a side note, it is a smart idea to have a staff member from the hotel where you are staying write down the name of the hotel in Thai on a piece of paper. In case your driver does not understand English, this can be incredibly helpful.
#2 – Take the Skytrain or Subway
During rush hour, or during heavy rains, you may have trouble finding a taxi. Even if you do get a taxi, you could find yourself stuck in traffic for over an hour just to travel several blocks.
The alternative to taking a taxi is to ride the Skytrain (BTS) or take the subway (MRT). You will find stops for both options at most major hubs. This is cheaper than taking a taxi, but may not get you to your exact destination.
#3 – Respect the Local Culture
With travel out of the way, the next tip is to make sure you respect the local culture, etiquette, and laws. You may notice that people in Bangkok tend to greet each other with a prayer-like bow. When someone greets you in this manner, it is respectful to return the greeting.
Also, when you are out in public, do not make a spectacle of yourself. Despite the fact that Bangkok is known for its nightlife, yelling and shouting is not appreciated.
As for the local laws, there are a few important tips. You should never deface any images of the Thai King. This includes images of the King that appear on money. This is against the law and will land you in jail. Also, all drugs are illegal in Bangkok and possession could result in a death sentence.
#4 – Visit Buddhist Temples
Now that you know a few basics about staying in Thailand, it is time to have fun. During your stay, you should definitely check out at a couple different Buddhist temples. These beautiful temples often feature intricate detail and amazing architecture.
There are over 400 temples (wats) located throughout Bangkok. Some of the most well-known Buddhist temples include Wat Phra Kaew (The Temple of the Emerald Buddha) and Wat Pho (The Temple of the Reclining Buddha).
#5 – Go Shopping at a Thai Market
Along with traveling to nearby Buddhist temples, your trip will not be complete without shopping at a Thai market. Bangkok is home to some of the largest markets in the world. You can find everything from clothing and foods to souvenirs.
At the top of the list of markets to visit in Bangkok is Chatuchak Weekend Market. There are over 15,000 booths. Each day, this market attracts over 200,000 visitors, which also makes it one of the most popular markets in the world. You could spend the entire day at Chatuchak market without getting to visit every booth.
Other places to check out include the Klong Toey Fresh Market (tons of fresh food) and Klongsan Market (food and just about everything else).
#6 – Stay Safe During Your Trip to Bangkok
Bangkok is a safe city for tourists, despite having a notorious red light district. You just need to follow a few basic safety precautions, as you would when you travel to any major city. You should never carry your wallet in your back pocket. You should always be aware of your surroundings. And, you should look both ways before crossing a busy street.
Bangkok is a major city, with over 14 million people in the metro area. From its origins as a small trading post, Bangkok has grown to become a sprawling city. The quick growth in the past several decades has led to a mixture of tradition and modern sensibility.
There so much to see and do in this city. While you are busy checking out the amazing sites, it is important to remain safe. Use the tips mentioned to ensure you have a great time and get the chance to see everything on your itinerary.
